We launched the project at San Diego BMX, where students got to walk the track and watch some BMX riders and listen to their stories. Students explored their identities, talking about parts of themselves that are above and below the iceberg. They decorated their helmets with parts of their identity and received feedback on their drafts. The 3rd graders also learned how to ride and take care of a bike or scooter.

Students have been learning about pollinators so they can become experts and superheroes in protecting them. We visited Cabrillo, where a ranger taught us about conservation and students made comics. We visited the zoo to learn more about pollinators. We went on a guided hike at San Dieguito River Park and we went to Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center to learn about the foods pollinators provide us with and cooked a delicious meal. Students made a class book called "Pollinator, Pollinator, What Do You See?" where the first half of the book shows threats to pollinators and the second half of the book shows human actions that can help pollinators.

1st graders are working hard being detectives to solve the words they are reading to become fluent readers. This also helps them when they use their creative brains to write. 1st graders wrote an opinion piece where they had to tell the reader what they thought the best game, pet, or place was. We started learning about opinion writing by reading The Perfect Pet by Margie Palatini and playing an interactive would you rather game that got students excited about sharing their opinions with each other and providing reasons to support them.
